What are the Safest Cars to Drive on Los Angeles Roads?

California has over twenty six million motor vehicles on the road.  With so many cars taking up space in densely populated cities, car accidents are unavoidable, resulting in many serious personal injuries and medical complications.  For this reason, it is always good to decrease your chance of serious injury and drive a car or vehicle that has a high standard of safety.  A term often used to gauge such safety measures is “crashworthiness,” which refers to the level of protection afforded drivers and passengers in the event of a car crash or vehicular collision.  A number of tests are conducted to determine the crashworthiness of a vehicle, including rollover tests, stability evaluations, seat protection, head restraint protections, and crash tests.

One of the leading chroniclers of the types of cars which test well under these evaluations is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, also known as the IIHS.  The IIHS report stated that the following cars meet or exceed the minimum safety standards for driving on Los Angeles roads and California streets:  Among large cars, Buick fared well with the Buick Lacrosse and Buick Regal.  The Cadillac CTS sedan also scored well.  The BMW 5 series, excluding the 4-wheel drive and V8, did surprisingly well this year.  The Ford Taurus and Dodge Charger did especially well with stability tests, and the Mercedes E Class, both the coupe and sedan were selected for the list. Volvo’s reputation of having safe large cars also continued, as its S80 model scored high in all categories.

Among small cars, the following were the top picks:

Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic 4-door models (except Si) with optional ESC, Kia Forte sedan, Kia Soul, Mazda 3 built after December 2010: sedan | hatchback, Mini Cooper Countryman, Mitsubishi Lancer sedan (except 4-wheel drive), Nissan Cube, Scion tC, Scion xB, Subaru Impreza (except WRX): sedan | wagon, Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Golf: 4-door models, and the Volkswagen GTI: 4-door models.
