A Personal Injury Attorney

A personal injury attorney is an attorney who deals with personal injury cases and may help protect your rights and assist you with your personal injury compensation claims. Examples of personal injury law causes of action include professional malpractice, wrongful birth, wrongful death, liable, slander, trespass, and nuisance. If you think you may have a case for a personal injury settlement, see a personal injury attorney.

Personal injury is the name given to the branch of tort law that covers any wrong or damage done to another in his person, property, rights, or reputation. A personal injury can happen at work, in a traffic accident, because of a faulty product or a faulty repair, because of a mistake during medical treatment, or because you slipped and fell on a wet floor or pavement. The personal injury can be physical or psychological but, to be considered actionable, it must occur due to the negligence or unreasonably unsafe actions of your employer, a manufacturer, your doctor, your landlord, or some other person or organization who owes you a duty of ordinary care.

If a friend or co-worker was recently injured, you may see if he/she would recommend his/her attorney. But if you’re not comfortable asking for recommendations, you may contact a personal injury attorneys in your area. After you have the names of a few personal injury attorneys, you are ready to set up an initial consultation, with each of them. These meetings are a good chance for you to learn about the lawyer and for him/her to know your case. Most personal injury lawyers won’t charge for these meetings, but you may double-check so that you are not surprised.

If you will prepare for your meeting, make a list of questions to ask from the attorney, including:

1) what is his/her experience working on cases like yours?
2) His/her assessment of your case, and how much money does him/her estimate you may be able to receive?
3) How the attorney charges for his/her services, and how much it could cost to handle your case. Feel free to ask the attorney any questions you have. Bring some paper to take notes; these notes will help when you make your decision. If you have any special needs in an attorney, such as one who works on fatal motorcycle accidents or represents motorcycle accident victims with back injuries, ask about these qualifications as well.

After you’ve had initial consultations with several personal injury attorneys, it is time to decide which personal injury attorney you want to hire. If you are deciding between a few attorneys, you can ask for references from their past clients. References may help you make up your mind.

Consider the following criteria when selecting an attorney:
1) Does he/she have the necessary skills and experience to handle your case?
2) Are you comfortable with his/her judgment of your case?
3) Does he/she have reasonable fees?
4) Does he/she offer a case strategy you agree with? Once you have found a lawyer who satisfies these requirements, you can hire him or her and begin your personal injury case.
Many personal injury attorneys work on a contingency basis, which means that they won’t get paid unless you get a monetary settlement. If a lawyer charges on an hourly basis, you will pay for the actual time he/she spends on your case.
